The Flu Shot
For the first time in over five years I got the flu shot and for the first time in over five years I got a cold so I posed the question on my Insta Story: is there a correlation? The response was massive! I learned about a lot of different perspectives on the subject. But the key in what I’m saying is that everything is a perspective. I had everyone from microbiologists to holistic healers sending me well-substantiated articles. The thing about all data is that the implications of the data are ALWAYS incomplete. Medical history has however proven that the “facts” are always changing. Many medical professionals seem the forget that in a lot of ways we really don’t know.
Having the “common cold" and having seen my MD about it, he blatantly told me that western medicine has no cure for the cold. There is so much that we don’t understand. What I do know is that the way each of our body’s works is unique and so it would make sense that the way each of us reacts to vaccines will be different as well. After listening and reading up on the varying perspectives here is how I drew my own conclusion:
In the 5 years my husband and I have been together he’s never seen me sick. I’ve been run down, I’ve been hangover, but never anything bacteria or virus related. I’ve taught sweaty classes back to back, non stop (sometimes with lots of sick students) for weeks straight while flying all over the world, getting minimal sleep and still making it out for cocktails, dinners and other celebratory occasions. I’m from a hardy stock. I know that my body, left to it’s own devices, has a mechanism for rejecting illness before it penetrates. So I don’t think it’s necessary for me to force exposure of anything into my blood stream that probably never would have gotten in in the first place.
I got the flu shot because I wanted to spend time with someone whose doctors required I be vaccinated. I do understand the concern and did what I felt was right at the time. However this years flu only matched 10% of the vaccine anyway.
A lot of these shots are very American. People all over the world in Asia, Australia, New Zealand and many other places are a lot healthier than Americans and they don’t do these things to their bodies. No matter how much science is thrown at me proving the harmlessness of these shots I also know that the information is incomplete and that some shots aren’t right for everyone. I could be wrong, but I really don’t think that they are right for me.
