Yes! "Fake it 'till you make it!"

January 30, 2019

I do tell my students “fake it ‘till you make it.” When one of my very capable students doesn’t believe in their ability to do a pose or believe in themselves in any way when I can see they are perfectly capable, I encourage them to wear the attitude of success. “Pretend you’ve done this before” and “with swagger, do it again” are another couple statements I tell my students. “Fake it ‘till you make it” is not about being insincere.  The sentiment is very sincere, it’s just a way of overcoming mental blocks that tell us we aren’t good enough.

You don’t have to be in total control!

You don’t need to know it all!

It’s good to have some space for the X factor!

Live with the questions and power on!

Confidence is something you can put on.  It’s a way of walking and thinking that can shift how we feel.  For me, “fake it ‘till you make it” is not about trickery, it is about pulling yourself out of a rut.

So next time you meet a blockage that you know deep down you can overcome, tell yourself: “Failure is a natural part of the learning process and now I got this!  I know I got it!” And then if you still don’t believe, as you approach the task at hand fake it!  Get rid of the tentativeness by pretending that you have done it a million times before!  You are a pro!  Summon that pro swagger and you are likely to pull it off.

If you still can’t do it, there’s always tomorrow.

Yoga does not need to be frustrating.  You have the rest of your life to work on this stuff!  Practice gratitude for a body that can try and get back up and do it again and again.

Gratitude is a muscle that must be exercised!

The more you practice grateful thoughts the more you will have to be grateful for.

Study how your mind interacts with each challenge and see how that affects your energy.  You don’t have to be pulled down by each and every loss. Instead you can choose to be inspired by it!  Cultivate self-awareness and change your life in a much more profound way than any silly pose ever possibly could. 💥
